Why Pollinate? Although wild honeybees & other native pollinators assist in crop pollination they cannot be relied upon as their numbers fluctuate greatly from year to year due to weather, destruction of habitat, agricultural pesticide use, and the effects of parasitic mite infestations. Many crops require honey bees to transfer pollen in order to have a good seed set and ensure that a good fruit develops around these seeds. Placing beehives in an orchard maximizes pollination and increases the quality of fruits and vegetables. Hives are placed in the orchard at a ratio of approximently one hive per acre for most crops. They are placed in the orchard when the blossoms begin to bloom and are removed when the petals drop, before any spraying takes place. Order early to ensure availability of hives! |
