No ordinary food is good enough for the honeybee.  It needs incredible amounts of energy to fly on the average of 15 miles per hour and between as many as 1,200 flowers in one flight from the hive.  Before leaving for a flight, the honeybee fills her honey sac.  As she gathers pollen, she moistens it with honey and pushes it into the pollen baskets enclosed in her hind legs.  One lot after another is pushed into the basket and compressed until it is filled with a single grain of pollen which is carried home to the hive and deposited in a cell for food. Pollen is the colony’s only source of protein.
